Macular degeneration may be treatable with Parkinson’s drug

A UA scientist led a study on age-related macular degeneration that eventually could help delay or prevent the eye disease, researchers say.

The study found that patients who take levodopa, or l-dopa, a common treatment for Parkinson’s disease, appear far less likely to develop macular degeneration, said Prof. Brian S. McKay, a co-principal investigator.

He found this relationship by studying medical and insurance data for over 15 years.
