Retinitis Pigmentosa Study Offers New Hope

A recent landmark clinical study at Harvard suggests that daily lutein and vitamin A supplementation may add up to 10 years of protection against further loss of sight for patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP).

Dr. Eliot Berson of Harvard Medical School observed a significantly lower decline in visual field for the group supplemented with 12 mg/day lutein and 15,000 IU vitamin A, compared to the placebo group. The overall decline in combined central and midperipheral visual fields was slowest in patients with the highest serum lutein levels or with the highest increase in macular pigment.
